|Personal History||2231 – 2249:
Niamh was born into a world in which she would never meet her mother. Laura O'Donoghue would tragically pass whilst giving birth to her only daughter. The lost of his wife impacted Niamh’s father, James, profoundly which would go on to affect the relationship he would hope to have greatly.
He would attempt to push his grief aside to parent his daughter, but several months later he found he could no longer cope. He sent Niamh to live with her grandparents, her mother’s parents, in Northern Ireland and took the busiest assignment he could find outside Sol.
That aside, Niamh had a relatively happy childhood. Her grandparents saw bringing her up as a way of being closer to their daughter, and did nothing but dote on her. Her father would visit from time to time, but would rarely stay long enough for Niamh to grow attached. Niamh would grow to respond to her father’s absence with anger, hoping that by lashing out he would realise how much she needed him.
This was how life was until Niamh began high school. Her father, now an Assistant Chief Medical Officer, would return to Earth in order to work on the bond he’d neglected. For the next five years, the pair would work on repairing their bond, Niamh would eventually take to spending the weekends with him, but would not live with him full-time.
Although her father had hoped for more, he accepted what she offered eager and worked hard to help his daughter get through high school with the required grades for Starfleet Academy. As Niamh had grown to understand her father’s actions, she developed an interest in psychology, eventually deciding that becoming a ship's counsellor was the only path she could follow.
2249 - 2253:
As she had hoped, she would be accepted for the medical track at Starfleet Academy and the young woman had made her way there eagerly, embracing the freedom her new environment provided.
Like most Academy Cadets, Niamh’s time passed without any events of significant note. She did well in her studies and got along well with most of her peers. Her relationship with her father continued to grow during her time there, with the pair taking the time to share dinner at least once a week.
2253 - 2255:
Now that she’d graduated Starfleet Academy, Niamh needed to begin focussing solely on the counselling aspect of her training. Whilst she continued her studies, she took up residency at the medical centre that served the academy. She would begin seeing patients a couple of months in and would later note that this was the first time she’d felt rewarded for the endless study.
Due to its size, and the fact it catered to different Federation Species, her recently provided her with a strong foundation for her counselling skills.
2255 - 2258:
In order to further diversify her skills and to ensure she had a better understanding of the pressures that came with being a Starfleet Officer and continued her residency aboard the USS Apollo, an ageing frigate that had been assigned to border patrols.
This assignment would have the greatest impact on the woman Niamh would become, and she’d soon be given ample opportunity to gain diversity. 9 weeks into their assignment, the Apollo came under attack from several pirate raiders. The Apollo was victorious, but at the cost of several personnel. Niamh would learn the importance of compartmentalisation as she worked tirelessly to help the crew through their grief.
2258 - 2261:
By the end of her residency, Niamh had had enough of Ship life. The Apollo was claustrophobic and The crew had gone through many roster mix-ups, leaving her to feel she was no longer working with the crew she’d experienced much with.
With the intent of further building on her experience, Niamh this time took the assignment station side. Hoping for more comfort, Niamh eagerly applied for an assignment aboard Starbase 6 as a counselling officer. Eventually, though, the itch to progress grew too strong and she requested assignment shipside once more.
2261 - 2263:
The Wellington, a walker class vessel, had recently lost their assistant Chief Counsellor to similar circumstance and had happened to be docked with Starbase 6. As far as she was concerned, it was a no brainer.
She’d stay with the Wellington for three years until an irreversible breakdown in the relationship she had with her Chief caused her to look for something new.
2263 - Current:
This time, she found there’d be a wait before she could take up her next transfer. Instead of waiting on the Wellington, she requested a temporary assignment on Starbase Arcadia, becoming part-time so she could enjoy a partial leave before the next opportunity presented itself.
