Second Chance

Mission: Episode 3: Foxes and Henhouses
Location: Ship's Lounge
Timeline: Current

Ian sat in the Defiant's Lounge gazing into the viewport watching the starfield zoom past, lost in thought. He had spent months dealing with the subtle and not so subtle differences between his culture and the culture of the Federation races. After embarrassing himself with the former Captain, he had come to terms with the fact that his new companions were far less open about intimacy and sensuality. So, for the most part, he had given up flirting or at least cut down on it. But then Elias Lindholm had walked into his life.

Walking into his life may have been something of an overstatement, they barely knew each other, as a matter of fact. But, the other man had walked into the gym, and kissed him. Kissed him. They hadn't even been on a date. He certainly hadn't objected, he'd even returned this kiss, but he had been surprised and confused him.

Now two days later he was still confused. He took another sip of the vodka he was drinking and closed his eyes.

Elias held a PADD in his hand and stared at it as he walked. He had been going over his predecessors watch orders and duty rosters all day. Elias wanted to make sure the ship and its security teams were prepared to handle anything thrown at it, especially in light of the revelations in Tholian space. He was also searching for a new Chief of Security, as Chief Crocker was only the acting security head. He had decided a change of scenery was better than in his office, so Elias decided to head for the Officer’s lounge.

Elias entered and made his way over to the food processor. He grabbed a mug and set it under the drink dispenser. He then pressed the switch that dispensed black coffee into his mug. As the drink poured he looked up and noticed a familiar face in the lounge, Ian Acainus.

Their encounter previously had been unexpected. The more Elias had thought about it, the more he realized he may have moved a bit to fast, and he hadn’t been ready to see Ian again. However, here was an opportunity to get things in the open. Elias took his mug and made his way over to the Alaskan.

“Howdy stranger,” Elias said as he approached.

Ian looked up, a smile playing at the corners of his lips, both brows raised, "Hello yourself, you want to sit?"

Elias nodded and sat down, taking a sip from his mug, "Sure." He set the PADD to the side and took a moment to glance back at Ian before looking at his drink, "Bit early for Vodka isn't it?"

"It's not that early," Ian argued, "as they say, "it's five o'clock somewhere."

Elias laughed a little and picked up his mug, "I'll drink to that. Though I'm sure Andorian Ale is stronger."

"Not that I'm complaining, but I was a little surprised. Why did you kiss me the other day?"

Elias sighed and set both the PADD and mug down on the table. He had been trying to formulate the right words for this question, which he knew would be asked, but it was still proving difficult. "Well, that is a good question. And while I'm sure there is a better answer for it, I can't figure out what that answer is," Elias said a little nervously. "I'll just come out and say that I did it on impulse. I mean I don't normally just go around kissing people, but... I dont know," he said as he placed his hands together on the table.

Ian gave the other man a brief nod and placed a hand on his."That's okay, I'm not complaining, go on."

Elias stared at the Akadian for a moment, "I do not regret what I did. I am not going to lie, I am attracted to you, very much so. But I feel that maybe things went a little too fast." He then took another sip from his mug. He then leaned back in his chair a bit, "What is your perspective? I'm not very familiar with Akadian courtship rules. I can understand if you didn't want me to kiss you."

"Well, that's the thing," Ian offered, "Akadians tend to be much looser, much more open to moving fast . I was just surprised that another species would be quite as free about such things. But now that I know how you feel, I wouldn't mind doing more than just kissing."

Elias nodded and smiled some. He took another sip from his mug before continuing, "It's not that we humans also move fast. Generally, there is a slower approach, as in going on a date before the 'relationship' starts. I was being impulsive when I kissed you that quickly. And I want you to know that I want something more than just a quick roll in the hay." He took a moment and then continued, "How does it normally work for Akadians? You said they are looser and open to 'moving fast', but does that take away from the value of the relationship?"

"I guess the best way to describe it in Terran terms is there are, em, different layers of relationship for Akadians. Sometimes sex is just sex, it's enjoyable, it's mutual, it's consensual That's perfectly acceptable and can happen in an instant, what you just called a roll in the hay. But people can become friends, but even in our deepest relationship, you'd call it marriage, we call it being bonded, we're still allowed discretions. I think you'd call them open relationships," Ian said.

"But I'm learning that most other Federation races aren't quite like that. But, if you want something more, something more traditional, I'm willing to explore it if you are?"

Elias nodded and reached over and took Ian's hand in his "I am, though you'll have to put up with some of my Terran complexities," he said a little jokingly and smiled at Ian.

Ian tightened his hand around the human's. "I'm willing to put up with yours if you're willing to put up with mine. Would it be appropriate to talk about some ground rules or is it too early for that."

"I dont think it's too early at all. What type of ground rules are you thinking of," Elias asked, then he let a sly smile come to his face. "You only sleep on the right side of the bed," Elias asked chuckling.

"Well," Ian said his face wearing a smirk, "If I was a smart ass, I'd say I only sleep on the topbunk. But, I guess it's a good thing I'm not a smartass. Seriously though, you said you didn't just want a roll in the hay, so does that mean you don't want to have sex right away, what exactly are you looking for? Are we keeping this, em, relationship to ourselves, or are we going to be open about it?

Elias thought about the question before answering. He didn't want to put Ian in an uncomfortable position, but he wanted to be honest with him. "When I said I didn't want just a 'roll in the hay', what I meant was I didn't want to just have sex and there be nothing behind it. Sex comes with the relationship in my opinion," he said as he looked into the Akadian's eyes. He then smiled and pulled Ian a bit closer while putting his arm around him, "And if this means you an I are now in a relationship, I dont care if people know or not."

Ian's smile was inspired by both Elias's words and actions. "I agree with you," he said, "sex shouldn't just a one night stand, there should be a relationship behind it. So, before we jump into bed, why don't we have an actual first date."

Elis smiled. He never would have thought of finding someone like Ian, but yet he had. Ian was someone Elias felt like he could be himself around, and it was interesting to be with a non-terran, "Of course, nothing would make me happier."

"Why don't we leave here and go someplace a little more private, even if it's just to talk?"

Elias finished off his mug and rose from his seated position, "Lead the way."
