|Personal History||Dustin was born and raised in a small West Texas town called Crane. His father was a Starfleet officer, though retired, who had been a Captain until he was injured during a skirmish with the Klingons. Facing the prospect of a desk job he chose, instead, to retire and return to the family business of raising cattle with his brother Mark. His mother, Claire, was a historical fiction writer who wrote stories focused on the ancient west, most set in Texas, and an amateur historian. The couple had one other child, Tommy, who was nearly a decade older than Dustin, who joined Starfleet when Dustin was only eight.
In school Dustin was a fair student, though he tended to focus more on sports, and his friends than he did his studies. Outside of school, if he wasn’t on the football field, he was helping out on the ranch, hunting, or fishing with his father. It was during those times that he was given the wisdom, and morals that would help him to become the man he would grow into, as well as a deep drive to join Starfleet and follow in his father’s footsteps.
When he was eighteen, freshly graduated from Crane High School, Dustin and his father made the trip to San Francisco to sit the entrance exam for Starfleet. Dustin’s original goal was to join Security, but his aptitude scores placed him firmly in helm control, a division he had never even considered. As it turned out he was actually quite good at it, and as his four years played out he realized he genuinely enjoyed the courses he was taking, and the prospects it would open up.
His first assignment out of the Academy was a one year preliminary shakedown cruise on the USS Bowie, an older vessel used for on the job training of new cadets. He showed exemplary skill, and when the time came to apply for a more permanent assignment he chose to confidently apply for a slot that had just come open on one of the fleets newest ships, the USS Defiant. When news came back nearly two weeks later that he’d been accepted he was both proud, and surprised.
