Red Deck Rap Session
Episode 5: Better Angels
Location: USS Defiant - Recreation Deck
Timeline: MD2 0627 hrs
White walls and the springy red surface of the track were all Dante saw as he ran. He'd chosen to get a good workout in before breakfast, and had made his way down to the deserted rec deck to do just that. He was running, pushing his body as far as he could. His breath was coming in spurts, and he could feel his heart pounding in his ears. A sort of calm had settled on him, as it always did as he ran, and a slight smile lit up his face, of which he was completely unaware. He had a pair of wireless earbuds in, with some fast paced electronica feeding into his ears, and spurring him on. He wasn't entirely certain when it had happened, but at some point he actually became aware that he was no longer the only person down here.
Slowing down he glanced around and saw a familiar blue skinned figure entering the rec deck. As he completed his lap he pulled out his earbuds and finally came to a stop. His bare torso was bathed in sweat, and the compression shorts he'd worn for his run were slick with it as well. Arching his back to get a deeper breath he held his hands up above his head, opening his rib cage up and breathing as deeply as he could as he walked across the track. He was jiggling his legs to stretch them a bit and keep them from cramping, and started swinging his arms across his body for the same reason, letting the tension of the run ease out of him before it could settled in and be a problem.
He finally got close enough to talk to the other officer at about the same time he reached his initial starting point where he'd left his water bottle and towel. Reaching down for both he squirted some of the cool liquid into his mouth, and then also onto his head to help him cool down. Using the towel he began to wipe the sweat off his body before it could cool him enough for him to feel a chill.
"Good morning, Ensign. Looks like I'm not the only one who likes to get their workout done and over with early.", he said with a smile.
Thyra was wearing a pink tank top and pink shorts. She had white sneakers on. Effectively it looked very good with her blue skin. She was doing som stretches as the lieutenant approached her. A smile formed on her blue lips as her eyes were twinkling. She replied, "Yes, sir, I do." She had yet to put her music on. But she held off a moment.
"You a fellow runner?", he asked, settling down on a nearby bench to better chat while she finished her warm-up.
"I am a martial arts student, but I never skip a good run." She smiled as she fineshed her warm up. "What about you, sir, any sports you like?" She stood in front of him. Her long white hair tied up in a ponytail.
Nodding approvingly Dante smiled, "Martial arts, huh? That's awesome. Definitely a good way to keep fit, and to keep yourself prepared for any eventuality too. What got you into them?" he asked.
"Well, my class mates sort of speaking," Thyra replied. "In the academy. I have done the royal guard training on Andoria. But apparently some of my class mates on the academy were in to martial arts, and Earth Martial arts, and they took me in to a class one time, and I have been doing it ever since."
"That's as good a reason as any. As long as it's something you truly enjoy. That's how it was with football for me as a kid. I got started playing with some of the other kids from my neighborhood and just kept going. Played it all the way through the Academy.", Dante replied.
"Communications, right?", he asked, changing topics.
Thyra nodded. "How am I doing, Sir?" She grinned.
"No complaint from my department. Seems like a good fit for you, and you seem to enjoy it, at least as far as I've seen.", Dante replied. "What made you decide on comms?", he asked. He was always curious about what drew people to the career fields they chose, the answers could tell you a lot about a person, and since this young officer was going to be on the bridge quite often, working with him, he wanted to understand her as well as possible.
"I like people, company," Thyra explains. "And what better place to always have the opportunity to talk to people then at comms." She smiled as she continued, "I did comms at a station, a lot of work for a comms officer there. In and out going traffic all the the time. I had some people having short conversations with me."
"That actually sounds pretty interesting, honestly. I can sometimes be a bit too gruff to be a comms officer, I won't lie. Tends to require a much more diplomatic personality than people think.", Dante replied.
"That's true, but you're doing fine now, sir," She smiled, "And I should know, I am the diplomat of the two." She looked around the room. "So what about you? How did you get to be where you are now?"
"If I'm being completely honest, I wasn't all that great at science and math, and I have no desire to either fix things, or blow them up, but I definitely wanted to be a part of Starfleet, so I took the aptitude exam and found out that I had a good fit in helm control. Hadn't ever even stepped foot in the cockpit of a shuttle, or on the bridge of a ship, but I seemed to have a certain knack for piloting. A month later I was given a formal flight test on a shuttle, and then they let me take the exam. Six years after that here we sit.", he said with a lopsided grin.
"And I wouldn't have it any other way. I not only had a knack for piloting, I actually love it. I've considered other departments, mostly just ops, or engineering, just to spice things up, and I did minor in starship operations at the academy, but sitting at the helm is what really excites me about my work, and that's good enough for me. ", he added, finishing out his thought.
"Everyone has their own thing," Thyra smiled. "But if there was anything that you could do once, what would it be?"
"Take the center chair, even if it was for only one day, and get a feel for what it's like to be truly in command of your own ship. That's my ultimate goal, career wise, but it would be nice to experience it now.", he said, smiling. "What about you? Anything other than comms that would really, truly excite you if you got to do it for a day?" he asked.
She took a deep breath as she thought about that a moment. "Either your position or tactical. But just for a day. I can only imagine the trill it must be to control the movements of this ship, or having to have all the ship's weapons under just your fingers." She laughed a little at that.
"Helm can be a little bit addicting. You don't really think about it, but having all that power at your fingertips, under your control, it can be a bit heady. I still remember the first time I took the bridge station for helm. I was so nervous my palms were sweating and I couldn't even eat breakfast that morning I was so worried I'd screw something up. But a few minutes after I sat down I sort of sank into the zone and next thing I knew my eight hours were up, and I realized I'd thoroughly enjoyed every second of it.", Dante replied, gushing, as he usually did, about how wonderful he felt helm control was.
Thyra smiled as she listened to him talking. "Sounds like you found your place. That's great."
"Yes, ma'am. Well, I've taken up enough of your time, Ensign. I'll let you get to your workout. I should probably get cleaned up and ready for my shift. Have a good one.", He said, grabbing his gear and heading for the doors.
She nodded and walked to the treadmill. "Oh and Lieutenant, nice talking to you. Maybe next time we work out together. Maybe spar." She grinned as she turned on treadmill to begin her exercise.
Turning back with a smile Dante replied, "Sounds good! I'll look forward to it!"
