The Man In Black
Episode 2: Inevitable
Location: USS Defiant - Lounge
When he'd heard that they were planning a rather nice jazz concert down in the lounge Dante knew he couldn't miss that opportunity. He'd quickly changed out of his normal duty uniform, into a pair of nice jeans, and a button-down in his normal dark colors, this time a dark green with an interesting geometric pattern embroidered in black silk thread, sleeves rolled up, and the top two buttons were undone.
Walking up to the bar he nodded to the bartender to get his attention, and as he approached he smiled, "A double jack and coke, please," he said and then watched as she turned to make his drink.
A few minutes later he was seated at one of the tables, drink in hand, smiling as he watched the rather impressive sounding group of musicians were being displayed on the screen at the front of the room.
He'd just taken a sip when he noticed a face he didn't recognize walk in and approach the bar as well. When the other man looked his way Dante raised his glass and gave a nod, being friendly to someone he assumed was a new addition to the crew. Not thinking anything of it he turned his attention back to the screen and focused on the music filling the air.
Like a very stealthy assassin, Elijah appeared in front of him. The 6foot6 imposing English man stood at the table. “Hello, Lieutenant.”
Dante turned his head slowly, a bit surprised, "Hello to you as well, Lieutenant," he said. "I don't believe we've met," he added, and then stood, extending his left hand, "Dante Rawlins, chief helm."
"Elijah Locke, Chief Intelligence Officer." He responded as he shook the young man's hand. Imposing and towering over him Elijah looked at the seat. "May I join you?"
"By all means," Dante replied, waving his hand at one of the other chairs. "Are you a fan of jazz?" he asked, curious if that was what brought the other man down to the lounge.
He shook his head. “Not particularly but I play the Cello.”
Dante nodded appreciatively, "I have never been much inclined to playing any instruments. I'm more of a sports guy, but I do greatly enjoy listening to good music," he said.
Elijah raised his glass to that and then took a sip. With a momentary pause he looked at the Officer. "So tell me, Lieutenant, what's the latest happenings on the Defiant?"
"Quite a lot, actually," Dante replied, taking a sip of his drink. "From a meet-up with a few alien species, some of which we are experiencing a first-contact with, and the upcoming arrival of the object, it's definitely not been boring. I just hope everything goes a bit more normally when that thing arrives. We've had enough surprises lately."
“I guess it’s part of being a Starfleet Officer, isn’t it? The mystery and the unexpected that comes with it.” Elijah responded politely with a smile as he took a sip of his drink. “Then again as Intel Officer I’m supposed to guess before it happens.”
"Or at least seem to have done so, I'm sure," Dante replied. "How are you settling in?"
He nodded. "So far so good, I've yet to fully unpack the contents of my Office and my Quarters look like they've been sealed for years." Elijah chuckled. "I've never served on a Constitution Class before."
"Me neither, before Defiant. It was a bit daunting when I first came aboard," Dante replied, and then took another sip of his drink. "You get used to it faster than you think you will, and the larger ship makes for more room in the quarters, and offices, so I, for one, am thankful for it. Plus, it's a hell of a lot of fun to fly," he added with a broad smile.
"I'll bet." A smile on Elijah's face in response.
"You get used to her after a while. She starts to feel like a normal-sized vessel. Always makes for a fun surprise when you go aboard another one that isn't quite so luxurious," came a nearby reply. A redheaded woman in science blues approached the table, with a fresh glass of wine in her hand. Claire Lafayette shot Dante an amused look. "You trying to get the new guy in trouble already?"
As he realized it was Claire approaching Dante stood a broad smile on his face. "Who, me? Never!" he said with a chuckle. "Care to join us?" He asked, waving her towards the seat he'd vacated.
"As long as I'm not interrupting anything," Claire replied, settling into the seat before extending her hand. "Sorry. Forgot to introduce myself. Claire Lafayette, Science Officer."
"Elijah Locke, Chief of Intelligence." He responded as he shook her hand.
After the two had introduced themselves, Dante, feeling a bit like a heel for not having introduced Claire himself, pulled another chair to the table and sat. "So, what brings you down here?" he asked, "Don't get me wrong, I'm very glad you are here," he added quickly, "I just didn't know you were planning to attend."
"Got bored," she added nonchalantly. "I was doing some after-hour work in the lab. Was hoping to move one of my experiments along, but the catalyst wasn't cooperating and I decided to actually be a real person and attend."
"I'm glad you did, I haven't been able to really see you much since I came back," Dante replied with a wide smile.
"I've been tied up. My new planetary nebula study is going well, but at the cost of virtually my entire social life. I've barely even seen Thyra the last few days," Claire said, before taking a not insignificant swig of her wine. "Suffice it to say, I'm a bit stir crazy." She set the glass down and turned her attention toward the other man at the table. "So Elijah Locke, Intelligence Officer, how's life aboard Defiant treating you?"
“So far so good.” He responded with a smile. “Sadly I must go I have a meeting to attend to in 15 minutes, catch you all again very soon.”
