Game Night Interrupted
Episode 2: When the Sword is Once Drawn
Location: USS Defiant, Docked at Starbase Arcadia
Timeline: Immediately after leaving Game Night
Chris stepped out of the Officers' Lounge and flipped open his communicator. "James, here."
The voice of Admiral Haster, commander of Starbase Arcadia, came through the speaker. "Commander James, I apologize for the time of this call but it couldn't be avoided. There has been an incident in the Igalla system."
Chris tensed up at the words. What kind of incident? Diplomatic, perhaps? Or was it related to the Shelley and that creature? "What kind of incident, sir?"
"War, Commander. Late last night, the Lenarans launched an attack on a Drenh convoy. They claim they were intending to simply capture it for entering space that was under Lenaran control, but things escalated." She paused and let out a slight sigh. "Over three hours, a half dozen ships were lost by both sides. The Lenarans said that they lost nearly 1800 lives. They estimate Drenh losses to be over 2000. Both sides have sent additional ships into the system since then. There have been a few small skirmishes, but nothing since then."
James felt his jaw tighten. This had escalated from a territorial despute into an armed conflict much faster than expected. Worse, the side the Federation was supporting had potentially instigated this conflict. "Do we know if the Klingons or Hydrans have taken any action?"
"They have both sent ships into the region. From what we can tell, the Klingons are backing the Drenh. They Hydrans appear to want the region for themselves. Commander, if the situation continues to worsen, we may have to break ties with the Lenarans and pull our colonists out of the region. While we don't want to lose access to this region of the frontier, we do not want to be pulled into a war with the Klingons or the Hydrans."
Chris kicked the wall in frustration. "Understood. Do we have a timetable on the arrival of the ambassadors?"
"They will arrive late tomorrow afternoon."
Chris nodded, though he realized the Admiral couldn't see that. "I will have the Defiant ready for launch as soon as the Ambassadors arrive."
The Admiral's voice took on a softer tone. "Thank you, Commander. I wish both you and your crew luck."
Chris closed the communicator, and let out a long sigh. This mission was getting complicated very quickly.
